This butterfly is fond of resting in trees, boulders, and other such surfaces against which they are camouflaged. They acquire their name due to the unusual way that the male produces a “cracking” sound as part of their territorial displays. It flies from Mexico to Brazil and rarely strays north of the Lower Rio Grande Valley in southernmost Texas.
